Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity as more of the public start to choose electric cars over petrol and diesel.
The reason for this shift is people are becoming conscious of their carbon footprint and exploring different modes of transport to travel in a more sustainable way.
The government’s desire to increase the number of electric cars on the roads is also contributing to the high level of interest people have in purchasing these.
In this blog, we outline why landlords should consider installing electric vehicle charging points on their driveways as tenants strive to become more sustainable and eco-friendly.
The impact vehicles have on the environment
Vehicles have a drastic effect on the environment as cars generally produce a large number of carbon emissions. Although not completely free from limitations, electric cars are the better choice of transport for the environment.
When driven and during the production process, electric vehicles produce far less air pollution and greenhouse gases compared to petrol or diesel cars.
Recent statistics show that in 12 months, 1.5million grams of carbon dioxide can be saved by using an electric vehicle. This suggests that over a car’s lifetime, a vast amount of carbon dioxide can be saved.
Government grants and the installation process
Electric cars form a large part of the government’s aim to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050.
As a result, grants that make purchasing electric vehicle chargers less expensive have been introduced.
The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint grant was introduced on 1 April 2022 to encourage drivers to buy electric vehicles. It is available to drivers who live in a flat or rent a property and provides them with a 75% grant towards installing chargers up to £350.
These are mounted into an exterior wall or a garage close to where the vehicle is parked. Choosing a qualified professional to carry out the installation will guarantee that the charger is safely connected to the mains electricity supply.
Office for Zero Emission Vehicle-approved chargers can be installed at a reasonable rate and are estimated to take up to three hours to complete.

Electric vehicle demand is expected to grow
As people grow more aware of the impact of their carbon footprint, government support increases and electric cars become cheaper, increased demand for electric-powered vehicles is certain.
Around 28,375 electric vehicle chargers were installed across the UK at the start of this year compared to 16,505 in January 2020.
In February this year, the Prime Minister announced that all new homes built in England will be required by law to have an electric vehicle charging point installed from 2022.
By 2030 the government also aims to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars. Plans to do this put landlords who install these chargers within their homes one step ahead of their competitors who do not.
Although vehicles can be charged at a public charging station, the convenience of a home charger is likely to attract tenants.
